The Quary Island Barn Residence is an ambitious architectural project situated on the scenic Burnt Island in Canada. The client, who recently acquired half of the island, approached us to design a unique and luxurious living space that harmonizes with the natural surroundings while offering an array of desirable amenities.
Our involvement in the project came highly recommended by the client’s brother, Ryan, with whom we have had a successful working relationship. The client expressed her vision for a barn-inspired design that incorporates a spacious garage for three cars, a gym in the basement, and a captivating kitchen with large windows that overlook the sea, providing breathtaking views and an opportunity to experience stunning sunsets.
One of the central design elements was the main entrance door, which the client requested to open directly to the sea, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the vast expanse of water outside. This unique feature enhances the overall experience and reinforces the relationship between the residence and its coastal setting.
To reflect the client’s preferences, the exterior design embraces a dark color palette, lending a sophisticated and contemporary feel to the residence. A prominent fireplace and high ceilings were incorporated into the living room to create a grand and inviting space that serves as the heart of the home.
Throughout the design process, careful consideration was given to blending the desired features with the island’s natural beauty. The architectural choices aim to create a residence that respects and integrates harmoniously into the surrounding environment, ensuring a serene and idyllic living experience for the client.

The door, crafted from precious wood, is flanked by two side lights, providing a glimpse of the expansive opening that leads directly to the sea. Stepping inside, the magnificent view of the ocean unfolds, extending a warm and inviting embrace to all who enter. A beautifully designed flower bed marks the transition from the interior space to the splendid panoramic view, creating a harmonious connection between the natural beauty outside and the elegant ambiance within.
The facade of the Quary Island Barn Residence is a striking blend of functionality, architectural innovation, and a deep appreciation for the surrounding landscape. Partially buried into the land, the gym and playroom are cleverly integrated, adding a dynamic element to the overall design. However, it is the expansive facade that commands attention, revealing a vast opening adorned with a thin layer of glass, creating an almost ethereal connection between the living room and the magnificent blue sea. All the living areas are strategically positioned to maximize the breathtaking view, ensuring that every moment spent in this barn-style house is immersed in natural beauty. The residence is composed of four distinct blocks, with one dedicated to the living area, another to the kitchen, a third housing the entrance covered by a green roof, and the final block serving as the garage. This thoughtful arrangement harmonizes practicality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal, resulting in a facade that is both visually stunning and functionally efficient.
